Barry Barr, who was born and raised in a fisherman's house on San Juan Island in Washington State, founded "KAVU" in Seattle in 1993. He established the company to create a sun visor that could withstand harsh environments, be durable and buoyant, protect eyes from strong sunlight, and be less likely to be blown away by strong winds while working on a boat. This sun visor later became KAVU's flagship model known as the "strap cap." In its first year, it rapidly penetrated the ski market, followed by the outdoor market the next year, and then the canoe and kayak markets. Finally, in 1996, it was selected as an official licensed product for the U.S. Canoe & Kayak Team at the Atlanta Olympics, significantly elevating KAVU's status as an outdoor brand.
