The birth of Dr. Martens traces back to the invention of the Dr. Martens sole in 1945. At that time, Dr. Klaus Martin, a German doctor injured in a skiing accident, developed a rubber sole with cushioning by processing old tires for rehabilitation. This special sole traps air inside, absorbing shocks during walking, and achieves a 'bouncing' gait called "bouncing." However, to maximize this sole's unique properties, highly advanced shoemaking techniques were required, taking over ten years and crossing the Dover Strait to the shoemaking hub, the UK. Eventually, the first model was completed after meeting the long-established shoemaker R. Glicks.
On April 1, 1960, Dr. Martens' first model, "1460Z," was released as the AIRWAIR brand. The 1460Z, named after its code name derived from the release date, received a great response, and not only London youth but also many musicians gained immense support. For example, the Beatles, Stones, and Who of the 60s, Queen and Police of the 70s, and The Smiths and Oasis from the 80s to 90s—all renowned big names. In addition to the functionality of its unique sole, the high design versatility that allows free coordination with all fashion styles has made it a timeless staple footwear, continuing to lead various cultures and fashion on streets worldwide.
