The "Beckman Boots," named after Charles Beckman, who founded Red Wing Shoe Company in 1905, are a reproduction of the round-toe boots that have existed since the company's early days, made with today's materials.
At a time when automobiles were not yet widespread and road paving was underdeveloped, 6-inch tall boots that could protect feet from the dust and mud on the roadside were more commonly worn than Oxfords (dress shoes). Many of these were made in a "flat box" style without a "toe cap." A "toe cap" is a hard component placed in the toe of the shoe to maintain its shape, but shoes without this were soft all the way to the toe and very comfortable to wear.
The Beckman "Flat Box" is a reproduction of a 6-inch boot from that era without a toe cap. It features the same upper design as the Beckman, made using the same "No. 8" last (wooden mold). In ordinary boots with a toe cap, the shape of the toe does not change, so the leather does not conform and the sole does not flex. However, in the "Flat Box" specification, the leather at the toe, which is not fixed by a toe cap, conforms to the foot, allowing the sole to flex freely, resulting in a comfortable fit that is not found in regular boots. As the leather conforms, the toe flattens and sinks, taking on a unique shape. This style is commonly seen in American boots from the early to mid-20th century, and the aging process along with the comfort of wear is part of the charm of the "Flat Box."
"Flat box" specification boots were commonly seen until the early 1960s. At that time, boots designed with a toe cap like #877 were often made with a "flat box" specification, and it seems that Red Wing Company specially changed the specifications to meet special requests from customers seeking that comfort.
The sole features a single sole design without a midsole, utilizing a Goodyear welted medallion sole, which achieves a soft flex in the sole and enhances the comfort that is characteristic of these boots.
This #9060 leather, known as Black Klondike, is a so-called "brown core" leather that has a black coating over brown-dyed leather. It also reproduces the black leather that was once common. As you wear it, you can enjoy the unique aging process where the brown core underneath the black coating becomes visible from areas that experience scratches and friction.
