The meeting of George Marks and Bob Swanson took place in the early 1960s, before outdoor activities became a new culture in America, at an outdoor goods shop called "Ski Hut" in Berkeley, California.
George was born in 1931.
After graduating from New York University with a degree in French, he spent about a year and a half involved in scientific research at a U.S. Navy base in Antarctica.
Bob, born in 1933, had attended the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) but dropped out.
Both were inspired by the hippie movement and became backpackers, eventually finding their way to "Ski Hut."
As soon as Bob joined the manufacturing department that George was in charge of, the two hit it off immediately.
While improving and repairing the shop's original products, they discovered their own creative talents and strong curiosity, leading to a flurry of new ideas.
However, no matter how innovative their proposals were, the shop owner did not recognize them.
Determined to pursue their dreams and potential, the two decided to become independent from "Ski Hut."
In 1965, they acquired a lofted warehouse in the neighboring town of Richmond, Berkeley, with limited funds and remodeled it into their workshop.
Thus, "Sierra Designs," which manufactures backpacking gear, was born.
The name is derived from the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range.
