Barbour, a brand that embodies the outdoor lifestyle of the British upper class, was founded in 1894 by John Barbour in South Shields, Northeast England.
It began by providing oilcloth for sailors, fishermen, and dock workers working under the unpredictable weather of the North Sea. Its innovative waterproof jackets made of oilcloth were highly durable and quickly spread Barbour's fame.
During World War I and II, it supplied waterproof clothing to the British military, and its high functionality is evidenced by the anecdote that during World War II, it was adopted as the official uniform for the crew of the submarine Ursula by Captain George Philip.
