"Marukawa started as a bookstore founded in 1948 (Showa 23). At that time, they sold used jeans by placing wooden boards in front of the store. In 1961 (Showa 36), they opened the 'Main Store' of Jeans Shop Marukawa in Machida, Tokyo. From 1966 (Showa 41) onwards, they began to expand as a chain in earnest, becoming a pioneer of roadside chain stores for jeans shops."
